1: How to make sense of Complex Technical Issues
Thesis 1 outlines a logical thinking system for science and technical students to help them recognize, understand, and manage systemic biases in scientific topics. It addresses how details presented by media (social, news, opinions, technical documentaries) may cause non-experts to misunderstand complicated or complex scientific and technical issues. The work described in this report covers topics of human biases and scientific paradigms, along with the question: Can cultures and partisan ideas influence aspects of the scientific world?
2: THe Conflict over Truth
Thesis 2 provides advanced critical thinking skills for students. It is called Comparative Analysis Reasoning, which includes a technique called the Critical Assumptions Test™. It is a procedure designed to establish the “truth” and the Truth of any proposition (quote marks and capitalization are used in this thesis to distinguish an absolute Truth and a “truth” established from the perspective of an individual or group). Techniques designed to disrupt logical thought, along with methods to recognize them, are also presented. The thesis covers scientific and philosophical arguments; and follows on from Thesis 1 (see above), but from a wider perspective.
3: Genesis & Science
It is estimated that nearly eighty percent of North American Christian youth are argued out of their beliefs at either high school or university. The arguments include scientific concepts portrayed as irrefutable facts, delivered with intense and passionate religious-like feelings. It appears that churches and homes are failing to present the information rich language of Genesis in sufficiently appropriate and contemporary language; especially when it is compared to the carefully crafted narratives that support the big bang, evolution, and other culturally driven philosophies. This thesis provides a scientifically constructed view of the early chapters of Genesis as most arguments against Christianity are culturally and scientifically based. This demands a careful discussion on the way modern-day science and our culture actually functions.
The role of science is to establish what is measurable, achieve accurate and precise measurements, and to ensure every effort is made to falsify its theories.
Bias in science is revealed by the extent scientists fall short in their logic, fail to address contradictions, or opine about matters that have neither been measured nor fully proven
Scientific Impartiality is to review facts without adding a cultural perspective
Critical thinking, with the avoidance of bias, requires much more than a kind heart and an open mind. It demands, the application of formal logic, a consistency in one's evaluations, an attention to the many relevant details - all topped off with, honesty, and above all, a consciousness of one's limitations. Cultivate these qualities in yourself and look for them in those who offer you their opinions
